A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR AUGUST 2012
It’s time for the Chorale to get started again. I hope everyone had a great
summer break. This begins my fifth year directing to Chorale and I’m gearing up
for an exciting and interesting year. We held our board meeting last evening and
were very encouraged by comments made by our members of the board. One such
comment was that our Spring Concert has been reported as our best ever! I’m
assuming they mean in recent history. I know we have had some phenomenal
directors over the 50+ years and I’m honored to be at the helm of this fine
group.
A Look at the schedule for 2012-13
Our enrollment and audition meetings for this year will be Monday, August
20th and Monday, August 27th. We are asking that you, as returning members
attend either one of these meetings but not both. If you will attend one of them we can get you enrolled have you
pay your $25 fee for the first term and receive your music packet. There will be
CD’s of the Patriotic Concert available for $10 each if you would like one.
These enrollment meetings save us a tremendous amount of organizational time so
please plan to attend one of them. If you wish to audition for VOCE, our small
ensemble (approx. 16 voices), we’ll be doing that at this time. Our greatest
recruiting tool is you, our faithful membership. If you have friends or
acquaintances who would like to join us this term, invite them to attend (or
better yet, bring them with you). As always, the audition for new members is
very informal.. The meetings on the 20th or 27th are also informal. They are
“drop in” meetings. We begin at 7:00 PM. You’ll fill out a little paper work (1
page) pay your membership and receive your music packet. Unless you are
auditioning as a new member or for VOCE, you’re finished and free to go unless
you want to hang around and socialize.
The music for the Fall of 2012 is a mix of both new and familiar Christmas
selections. Some of it is by Derric Johnson (we did 3 of his pieces on our
Patriotic Concert). These are arrangements that have been done at Disney for
“Carol and Candlelight” for a number of years. They are really nice arrangements
of some popular carols. We will be doing an Ave Maria by Biebl. There are some
presentations of this piece on Youtube if you’d like to listen (they are men’s
voices but we will be doing SATB. Some other favorites will be Winter
Wonderland, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, and Masters In This Hall.
That’s not the whole program but you get and idea of what’s in store. Our
concert dates for the Fall are Tuesday, December 4th at BCC, and Wednesday,
December 5th at Indian River City United Methodist in Titusville. That’s my home
church but they asked me instead of me soliciting a performance. VOCE will have
an additional performance on Tuesday, November 27th for the Brevard Symphony
Auxiliary in Titusville. I suppose I should mention that our rehearsals begin
the Monday after Labor Day, September 10th at 7:00 PM. Our Fall rehearsals will
run from 7-8:30 with VOCE rehearsing from 8:30 to 9.
Moving ahead to the Spring of 2013 we will have two different concerts. In
March we will perform a concert of folk music from around the world including
some Brahms some French, maybe Spanish, British and even some 60’s American folk
music (you know, Hootenanny stuff). Then in May we will join the Community
Chorus from Melbourne to sing Mendelssohn’s Elijah with Robert Lamb conducting the choirs and full orchestra.
I kook forward to seeing you on either the 20th or the 27th and then on
September 10th. As is always the case, some people do not get back into town
until mid to late September. If you fall into that category, please join us when
you get into town. Just keep in mind our attendance policy of only 3 missed
rehearsals. Attendance will be taken beginning on September 17th, our second
rehearsal. It’s going to be a great year! Come and join us.
