Welcome to the 2011-2012 season of the Brevard Chorale. Our May 3rd
concert was, by far, the best attended and most enthusiastically
received performance we have had since I began directing the group
during the Fall of 2008. About 7 minutes of that performance can be seen
and heard on YouTube (part
1; part 2).
I had no idea that a Pops Concert for Boomers would be so well
supported.
That brings us to the present. Our Fall concert 2011 will bring out some
choral standards from my past. Having attended high school in the 60’s
Jean Berger and Howard Hanson were popular choral writers. We’ll be
doing a piece by each of these celebrated writers. In addition, we will
be doing three canons by Joseph Haydn and Bach’s “Jesu Joy of Man’s
Desiring.” Many of you are familiar with Andre’ Thomas from Florida
State University. We will be doing one of his lively favorites. VOCE,
our select ensemble, will perform two challenging Christmas pieces. The
Christmas portion of the concert will include a setting of the “O Magnum
Mysterium” by Mortin Lauridsen, a traditional Spiritual, a setting of “O
Holy Night” followed by an exciting closing setting of “Joy To The
World.” I’m truly excited about this Fall. We’ve shown some growth in
numbers each term since 2008. I’m in hopes that this trend will
continue.
For those interested in the Spring 2012 term, we will be doing an
unusual Patriotic program. 2012 is an Olympic year and an election year.
Frequently, patriotic programs are very predictable. This concert,
however will have some unusual numbers but still culminating with the
Wilhowsky “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
Our schedule for the season is as follows:
August 22 and August 29 7:00 - 8:30 PM Choral Room
Auditions and enrollment (choose one of these dates)
September 12 First rehearsal 7:00 - 9:00 PM Choral Room
December 5 Dress Rehearsal for Fall Concert
7:00 - 9:00 PM Simpkins Fine Arts Auditorium
December 6 Concert 7:30 PM Simpkins Fine Arts Auditorium (Cocoa Campus)
April 30 Dress rehearsal for Spring Concert
7:00 - 9:00 PM Simpkins Fine Arts Auditorium
May 1 Concert 7:30 PM Simpkins Fine Arts Auditorium (Cocoa Campus)
Here is just one final word about August 22nd and 29th. You need only
attend one of these evenings. If you are new to the Chorale, we would
like to have take a very informal audition to become acquainted. It is
not a prepared audition. I will just ask you to sing in a group setting
(not solo) and answer a few questions about your musical background. If
you are interested in being a member of VOCE, our ensemble, I will have
you sight read and sing your vocal part in a short excerpt. If you are a
returning member, no audition is necessary unless you want to be a part
of VOCE.
Consider this your invitation to join us for 2011-2012.
