Did you know there are two community choral groups connected to the Eastern Florida State College? You are connected to the website for the Brevard Chorale which rehearses and performs at the Simpkins Fine Arts building on the Cocoa campus on Clearlake Road. The Brevard Chorale is the oldest and original community chorus connected with the College for 50 years. The other group is called the Brevard Community Chorus which rehearses and performs at the King Center in Melbourne. You may ask, why two groups? First, the Brevard Chorale is convenient for individuals living in Titusville, Cocoa, Cocoa Beach and Merritt Island. Second, obviously, is that the Community Chorus is more convenient to those living in Melbourne and further south. There is another difference in the type of repertoire performed. The Brevard Chorale performs smaller major classical choral works as well as more standard choral repertoire that may not be accessible to the average church choir. The normal size of the Chorale is from 50 to 70 members. Sometimes the Brevard Chorale is accompanied by a chamber orchestra and sometimes by a talented piano accompanist. The Community Chorus on the other hand consists of approximately 100 members and is able to do major choral works by the masters utilizing larger orchestras. For instance, last Spring they performed the Verdi Requiem. When the current director for the Brevard Chorale took the baton he made the decision to provide an alternative to the Community Chorus. From time to time the two groups have merged to perform a Mozart Requiem or Haydn’s Creation. However, it serves the community well to focus the two groups differently. In the past few years Brevard County has been treated to large choral works by the Community Chorus as well as Broadway, the Movies, patriotic and Pops by the Brevard Chorale. So, if you enjoy hearing good quality choral music, we hope you’ll support both groups. If you enjoy singing good quality choral music, you are invited to join one or both groups. We are indeed blessed that EFSC sees the value in providing a variety of opportunities to our community.
